His major contributions in the area of prostate cancer include pioneering and improving the surgical technique for the nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy, establishing recombinant erythropoietin as a safe and effective blood management strategy for men undergoing radical prostatectomy, the development of an index to predict the return of continence following radical prostatectomy, the development of an algorithm defining criteria for performing nerve-sparing surgery, demonstrating that the urinary catheter can be safely removed one week following surgery, and the evaluation of the Cavermap, a device intended to intraoperatively localize the nerves that are associated with erections.
